The CS100: Cybersecurity Fundamentals course aims to build a strong foundation in both offensive and defensive cybersecurity skills. Upon completion, participants will:

  1. Understand core offensive security concepts such as vulnerability identification, exploitation techniques, and basic penetration testing methods.
  2. Develop defensive cybersecurity skills, focusing on incident detection, analysis, and response.
  3. Analyse and interpret security logs to identify potential threats and effectively communicate incidents.
  4. Master fundamental cybersecurity principles, including Zero Trust models, OSI model, and security best practices.
  5. Gain hands-on experience through interactive lectures, practical labs, and a capstone project simulating a real-world attack and defence scenario.

Course Outline

Pre-Class Preparation

All Heicoders students will have access to course materials via our online e-learning portal.

To prepare for the course, essential resources are provided to familiarise you with the prerequisite concepts and tools used during the course.

Our friendly instructor and teaching assistants are always ready to assist if you encounter any issues. You are also welcome to join our Telegram channel to leverage connections with fellow students, alumni, instructors and tech hiring managers.

Lesson 1: Introduction to Cybersecurity
  • Understand the foundational concepts of cybersecurity, including its importance and industry demand
  • Learn the CIA Triad principles (Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability) and identify common types of attacks such as malware, phishing, and DDoS
  • Explore basic defence mechanisms, including firewalls, antivirus, and access control
Lesson 2: Network Security Essentials
  • Gain an understanding of network security protocols, including TCP/IP, UDP, HTTP, and HTTPS
  • Learn encryption basics, VPN usage, and strategies for preventing unauthorised access
  • Analyse network attacks like man-in-the-middle and sniffing, while exploring firewall configurations as a defence mechanism
Lesson 3: Secure Coding and Application Security
  • Study secure coding principles and best practices, referencing OWASP Top 10 vulnerabilities
  • Identify and defend against common web vulnerabilities such as SQL injection, XSS, and CSRF
  • Gain hands-on experience with tools for application security, including static code analysis and penetration testing
Lesson 4: Threat Intelligence and Incident Management
  • Learn about the importance of threat intelligence and types of cybersecurity incidents
  • Understand the processes of incident response, from preparation to recovery
  • Explore tools such as SIEM and forensic platforms for effective incident management
Lesson 5: Ethical Hacking and Penetration Testing
  • Understand the fundamentals of ethical hacking and the responsibilities of a penetration tester
  • Learn penetration testing stages, including planning, scanning, exploitation, and reporting
  • Practise using tools like Nmap, Metasploit, and Burp Suite in a simulated penetration testing exercise
Lesson 6: Security Operations Centre (SOC) Functions
  • Discover the roles and responsibilities of SOC teams in managing cybersecurity incidents
  • Learn about SOC processes, including triage, escalation, and incident management workflows
  • Explore specialised SOC functions, such as digital forensics, threat intelligence, and malware analysis
Lesson 7: Cybersecurity Careers and Emerging Trends
  • Explore career pathways in cybersecurity, including roles in Red, Blue, and Purple Teams
  • Learn about industry certifications, skill-building platforms, and job-hunting strategies
  • Study emerging trends in cybersecurity, such as AI, machine learning, and automation in security

    If you are a Singapore Citizen aged 25 and above, you can use your SkillsFuture Credits to offset the course fees for this Cybersecurity Fundamentals certification.

    To use your credits, you will have to sign up for the course and submit a claim by:

    Is there any form of certification upon completing the course?
    Yes, digital certs are provided upon completion! All Heicoders students will receive a digital certificate (accessible via website, PDF downloadable) which can also be uploaded as a Linkedin digital certificate.     For payment could I make a deposit first, and complete the payment closer to the course’s commencement date?
    I am keen on your class but can’t make it for one session. Is there a makeup class?

    Yes, a makeup class is possible on a case-by-case basis. We strongly advocate for full attendance among students, yet we recognize that severe unforeseen events may occur. For such instances, We will grant such students a one-time accommodation to attend a makeup session or a live stream of the recorded class.

     

    For Learners Intending To Use Subsidies

    If you are planning on using any subsidies (e.g. UTAP, IBF, SkillsFuture Credits), do note that these subsidies require learners to have at least 75% class attendance before you are eligible for subsidies.

    Will students be provided recorded sessions to revise the weekly lectures?

    Yes, lesson recordings are provided.

    You are welcome to use the lesson recordings and materials for reference whenever you need a review of a particular lesson. Our Heicoders curriculum team takes great pride in documenting the class content thoroughly, so feel free to go through the lesson materials at your own pace. You could always reach out to your Teaching Assistants as well if you have questions outside of class.

    I just registered for the course and am a NTUC Union member. How do I apply for the UTAP subsidy?

    The UTAP subsidy is disbursed by NTUC to eligible students on a reimbursement basis. After completing the course, Heicoders students can then apply on the NTUC website for reimbursement, and upon approval they would usually receive a direct deposit from NTUC to their bank accounts within two to three weeks.
