The CS100: Cybersecurity Fundamentals course aims to build a strong foundation in both offensive and defensive cybersecurity skills. Upon completion, participants will:
- Understand core offensive security concepts such as vulnerability identification, exploitation techniques, and basic penetration testing methods.
- Develop defensive cybersecurity skills, focusing on incident detection, analysis, and response.
- Analyse and interpret security logs to identify potential threats and effectively communicate incidents.
- Master fundamental cybersecurity principles, including Zero Trust models, OSI model, and security best practices.
- Gain hands-on experience through interactive lectures, practical labs, and a capstone project simulating a real-world attack and defence scenario.

Pre-Class Preparation
All Heicoders students will have access to course materials via our online e-learning portal.
To prepare for the course, essential resources are provided to familiarise you with the prerequisite concepts and tools used during the course.

Lesson 1: Introduction to Cybersecurity
- Understand the foundational concepts of cybersecurity, including its importance and industry demand
- Learn the CIA Triad principles (Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability) and identify common types of attacks such as malware, phishing, and DDoS
- Explore basic defence mechanisms, including firewalls, antivirus, and access control
Lesson 2: Network Security Essentials
- Gain an understanding of network security protocols, including TCP/IP, UDP, HTTP, and HTTPS
- Learn encryption basics, VPN usage, and strategies for preventing unauthorised access
- Analyse network attacks like man-in-the-middle and sniffing, while exploring firewall configurations as a defence mechanism
Lesson 3: Secure Coding and Application Security
- Study secure coding principles and best practices, referencing OWASP Top 10 vulnerabilities
- Identify and defend against common web vulnerabilities such as SQL injection, XSS, and CSRF
- Gain hands-on experience with tools for application security, including static code analysis and penetration testing
Lesson 4: Threat Intelligence and Incident Management
- Learn about the importance of threat intelligence and types of cybersecurity incidents
- Understand the processes of incident response, from preparation to recovery
- Explore tools such as SIEM and forensic platforms for effective incident management
